SISJ BEAUTY: TOUSLED TOP KNOTS HOW-TO >

Neck sweat is never a good thing, nor is blonde hair stained with fake tan – but hey, welcome to my summer life #paleskinproblems. To an outsider (or even to my close friends) I have no doubt I appear to be a ‘high-maintenance/up-keep’ kinda-gal, and to some extent I am. However, I am also super lazy, particularly when it comes to my hair and styling it. It also appears my six month old bubba has a fascination with pulling it out, like I haven’t lost enough as it is! Today on the blog I am sharing some of my easy-peasy how-to steps, some fab #hairspo images and complimentary products. I am sure I am not alone when I say my perfect top-knot is often the one I put together in 0.3 seconds before I jump into the shower! Hopefully today’s tips and products, combined with some mind/brain-spells will have us all looking like #wetoteswokeuplikethis.

THE TOP-TOP KNOT:

When it comes to the TOP top knot (all up) style, I am a messy girl all the way. I don’t have the ears or hairline to pull off a sleek one. As I mentioned above, often the key to achieving the perfect #messyhairdontcare top knot, is actually not trying at all. I like to pretend that I don’t really have an important event I need to look amazing for, but in fact that I am about to jump into the shower and shave my legs. Of course this technique doesn’t always work, especially when you have like a really clever brain like me. So if you are good at stuff too, here are some simple steps to follow:

*To get that messy/beach look, avoid straightening your hair or blowaving it first. I find this style works better on ‘dirty’ (at least day two) hair, than it does on clean hair. If you do want this look after you’ve freshly washed it, adding some product is the way to go (see my recommendations below):

  • Start by putting your hair in a high pony tail in a position that compliments your face shape/bond structure
  • Depending on your desired look, you can either split your pony tail in two and wind in opposite directions OR all the same way for a softer look (*for extra thickness, I often back comb my pony tail before I start)
  • Once you’ve got it all sitting where you want, add some pins (I prefer to use ‘ballet pins’ as I call them, these are the wide ones). You can use bobby pins, but you then risk seeing dents in the bun. Bobby pins however are great for the ends of the pony tail, so tuck these right under the rest of the hair and secure with a bobby pin or a double prong pin curl clip)
  • Once the bun is secure you can softly loosen it a little (get your hands in the claw position and pull downwards)
  • BOOM – you’ve done it! Now, give it a spray with a medium strength spray (the crisp 90’s gel look isn’t great – so avoid those intensely strong hold sprays for this look)
  • This is where I usually pull a few bits out around my ears, neck and hair line to soften it up – a must for that boho/messy look
