SISJ KIDS : DIY MESSY PLAY AT HOME >

Before anyone brushes off hosting your own DIY messy play sesh at home, please note: I AM AN OCD CLEAN FREAK! Legit. It’s all about creating a messy space, then embracing the messiness and having ample towels/wipes/baths ready-to-go! I’ve set-up areas both inside and out, but it’s the planning that’s key. Below I’ve listed my fave kid’s furniture, paints/craft supplies, colouring in templates and a whole heap more. As you can see, we LOVE messy play in our home, and it doesn’t need to be feared. It also doesn’t need to be an expensive activity either. With Christmas just around the corner, artwork makes wonderful gifts and great wrapping paper! Enjoy!

THE BENEFITS OF ART/MESSY PLAY FOR KIDS:

As I said, I am super OCD when it comes to a clean house and order – of course, that’s all relative now we have a toddler! However, I haven’t let this get in the way of her playtime and activities that we can do together. I LOVED art/crafts as a child and both my grandma and nanny were amazing painters and very creative (so I’m claiming we both received a wee bit of their talent!). MG is obsessed with painting and putting things together – aka, hands-on activities… AND ANYTHING MESSY! She also prefers her hands over a paintbrush (yay, ha!), but we make it work.

Our messy/creative/craft sessions are fantastic for so many reasons, but number one > WE GET TO DO IT TOGETHER. You then have the benefits of improving their fine motor skills, allowing your child to express themselves creatively through colour/design, it can help improve visual learning and assist with their decision making process – just to name a few, Oh, AND… IT’S SO MUCH FUN! duuuuh. I’m also that mum who cannot throw out one single piece of artwork she does! I swear she could draw a dot and I would insist it be featured in the Uffizi! Hence why I have framed so many pieces of her artwork around our home, but please note: ON A BUDGET (IKEA, IKEA, IKEA) – pics below.

MG’S EASEL & FURNITURE: IKEA baby, where else?! AND it comes in pink, woo!! We purchased this for $29.99. I would also suggest checking out the Mammut Tables (they come is a variety of pastel options), as well as the Flisat Children’s Table – a work-like bench with a storage bucket built-in for all their drawing/craft equipment (for parents who like to clean-up the mess afterwards, or at least hide it until next time!) – this one retails for $89.00, but will last well into early primary school for these sorts of activities.

MG’S FLOOR COVER: I bought a giant (cute!) jellybean plastic mat from Spotlight about a year ago. They have a few options in the fabric department and you just choose your design and size – from memory it was no more than $15. Ours is covered in mess and I never bother to clean it, I just ensure it’s dry from our last play. I have also started using her foam puzzle mats from when she was a baby for more comfort outside – here’s the link to the one I bought a few years ago at Baby Bunting ( CLICK HERE ). I have also seen plastic table cloth rolls (disposable) at Lombard The Paper People, so this is another option and it’s even less messy, as you can throw it out when you’ve finished!

MY PAINTS & CRAFTS OF CHOICE: I am personally a BIG Crayola fan, as I know they are safe (and WASHABLE!), and they actually have some really gorgeous colour options (stage mom I know!). I buy most of these at Officeworks – here’s the link ( CLICK HERE ). I have bought a few paints/glitters from the local $2 shop, but just be careful with these and ensure you are buying paints/glues etc. that are safe. You would also be surprised, but the leading Supermarkets also have a few options too (and trusted brands). Of course, there are art supply shops too – but you will most likely pay a little extra. The $2 shop is GREAT for coloured paper, canvas boards (from mini to super size). If you are bayside in Melbourne, you need to check out the one opposite The Food Smith on Hampton St, Hampton. LUUUUUUHRVE IT. I also buy all my craft supplies here – stickers, cut-outs, flowers, glitter/sequins etc. Spotlight also have an AMAZING selection of chalks, paints, pencils/textas and craft supplies too (and they are cheap!).

COLOURING IN TEMPLATES: While we love a blank canvas #dadjoke, MG also loses her mind when I pull out a colouring-in template – especially a themed one! Below I’ve included some of my favourite links to ones you can download and print for FREE!
