SISJ HAIR & BEAUTY: MY TOP KNOT HOW-TO & SPO >
Messy or neat – all top knots are sweet! While it’s the perfect summer-do, it’s also an all-year-rounder. It’s cool, it’s chic and it says: “I so woke up like this!” > (not really, I spent ten minutes trying to look amazing!). Here is my how-to on achieving the perfect TK, enjoy!
MY HAIR HOW-TO (MESSY):
First of all you need to decide whether you are going for a messy or more structured/neat look. This will impact on what products you use and your prep work. While it may look like bed hair, great bed hair takes work! I am definitely a messy girl, as it gives the bun more thickness and texture.
STEP ONE: If you want some added texture and hold, add some product to your lose hair. I love a bit of texture spray, dry shampoo and flexi hair-spray (my recommended products are below). The dirtier your hair, the better it works! For maximum hold, start by pulling your hair back into a high pony tail. There should be a ledge on the back of your head (almost like a mini shelf), where the top knot will sit best. Aim to tie the pony in the middle here. Alternatively you can leave your hair lose and skip straight to the later steps by twisting (for a more relaxed look and feel).
STEP TWO: Here is where we all differ. I have a few ways of doing it, depending on the desired look. For the ultimate messy TK look, gently tease the pony tail before you twist (back comb). Start by diving the pony with your hands into two sections and wind it around the base and up, in opposite directions. If you wish to stop along the way to pin, do that here.
STEP THREE: This step is all about the finishing touches. Pull the last strands on the two sections back around the base to cover the hair tie and secure with a bobby pin. When you are happy with it’s basic structure, you can work some extra magic now. I often will loosen a few sections, both in the bun and on my head. You can do this with your finger or the end of a comb. Complete the look with some flexi-hold hair spray and voila! Your sexy bed hair is ready to wow.
