WOMEN WHO INSPIRE: CASS DELLER

WOMEN WHO INSPIRE: C A S S  D E L L E R  >

We’ve all discussed our ‘top five’ at some point – right?! Mine goes something like this > Dwayne Johnson, Sam Pang, Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt, Benjamin Bratt… Sorry, that’s a dangerous and long-winded tangent I could go off on, ha! My REAL point is: CASS DELLER is totally and utterly in my top five! I met the beautiful Cass at the One&Only Hayman Island, where we were both holidaying for the first time with our firstborn babies in 2015. We’ve stayed in touch since then and have caught-up every time we’ve visited Noosa, where Cass lives and works with her gorgeous family. We’ve shared in the ups and downs of motherhood, had SO many giggles together, and she was the most incredible support to me when we lost Charlotte. I’ve wanted to feature Cass in my WOMEN WHO INSPIRE interview series for so long, so here it is! A big thank you to Angelina Tully, my year 10 work experience student, who put this interview together – you nailed it girl. SJ x

Tell us a little bit about your business/designs?

Cass Deller Design is just over five years old and was originally born out of my love of design and illustration. Our Studio is based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and houses myself as well as our small team of designers.

Our business first began with a focus on watercolour illustrations and hand lettering for beautiful stationery, logo design and branding. Since showcasing our illustration and coastal design style, this has led to working with amazing clients for textile and surface designs, which is a large focus for our business now.

How does living and working in Noosa influence your designs?

Noosa is a major influencer in the work that we create. I am originally from Brisbane, and my parents used to take us on regular family holidays to a special spot in Noosa. It is such a memorable experience for us, and the coastal Noosa vibe has influenced my work for years. Four years ago when my husband and I started our own businesses from home, we knew that we could work from anywhere in the world, so we chose Noosa.

You are qualified in many areas of design, why do you prefer textile and pattern making to other areas, e.g./ graphics and logo making?

For me, there is nothing like the feeling of seeing your designs out there in the wild. As a past Interior Designer, I have always loved surface design and find that I gravitate towards 2D design like wallpaper, textile patterns and stationery.

The fact that I also live in bikinis most months of the year means I am in love with swimwear design and resort wear fashion.

What is the inspiration behind your designs?

You can probably notice a coastal trend in my designs, which again, stems from years of family holidays in Noosa. I distinctly remember coming back home from every Noosa holiday, full of creative energy, wanting to paint & draw all of my ideas. All of my paintings back then were of girls on the beach, bikinis and palms. I would spend all year looking forward to those 3 weeks every January so I could be inspired again.

Our European holidays have also influenced my work a lot. Our travels to the Italian and French coastlines have left a beautiful imprint on my creativity.

The fact that we are able to live the coastal lifestyle everyday is a reflection on my work and a reminder to be true to my style and myself.

What has been your favourite design from the CDD collection and why? What is your favourite style to produce?

It’s really hard to pick a favourite as I have new favourites with each collection that is released each month. Florals and palms are always a personal fave though. We absolutely love to create custom designs for our clients too, which is also a strong element of our textile and surface design offering.

What have you found to be the most rewarding part of your job?

100% seeing our designs out there in the world, being enjoyed by their owner or the public! Whether it’s on a beautiful wall within a private apartment, or on a stunning swimwear piece for everyone to see. It is a feeling I will never get tired of. We just want our designs to be enjoyed and to spread the love and positivity that goes into each design.

The success of your business is clearly evident, but how do you see it growing in the future?

The possibilities are endless and that’s always how we view the business. We have so many ideas for the future and are excited to expand more into the textile and surface design industry. We are attracting some incredible clients and unique projects, which we are really excited about. We have a new studio planned in the next couple of years, which will no-doubt see us grow even further.

What do you think is the benefit of the custom design option that you offer in developing relationships with clients?

We pride ourselves on client relationships and customer service, so these custom projects are key. It means that we can work closely with our clients from the very beginning and tailor an illustration or design specifically to them and their brand. We have a number of loyal clients that we love consistently working with and we love to see our businesses growing together.
