SISJ WOMEN WHO INSPIRE: SALLY OBERMEDER >
Today on SISJ is the lovely, brave, beautiful, lovely, talented, lovely, Sally Obermeder. I was lucky enough to meet Sally Obermeder last year at a ModelCo Cosmetics launch with Rosie Huntington-Whitely in Sydney. As we are both represented by Roxy Jacenko at The Ministry of Talent, I have witnessed Sally’s incredible and continuing success first-hand. An established and successful author, a co-host on channel 7’s The Daily Edition, lifestyle blogger at Swiish, breast cancer survivor and mother – there’s not a lot this amazing woman can’t do! I would like to thank Sally for today’s interview and sharing her story.
On a personal note, I would also like to mention the morning I met Sally was the day I found out I was pregnant! I had just arrived in Sydney for work, after being told the great news from my husband on the runway as I left Melbourne airport. I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed and a little in shock at the launch, particularly after all the trouble we had experienced in getting pregnant. Sally was SO warm and engaging and I can’t thank her enough for giving me the warm fuzzies and a giggle! While I meet many fabulous people in my line of work, very few leave a lasting impression on you, but Sally was absolutely one of those. I hope you all enjoy today’s inspiring and very honest interview with one of Australia’s gems!
QUESTION ONE: With such dynamic media experience and previous jobs, do you have a favourite and why?
I absolutely LOVE live TV. The unscripted nature keeps you on your toes. You don’t second guess and it’s your true personality that comes through. Second to that would be mc’ing events – it is the same as live TV… it’s me being me. I especially love it if it’s a big audience, like when I hosted Kim K and Khloe K at Westfield. Both times, it was thousands and thousands of people and I got the crowd chanting and screaming… how much fun is that!!!
QUESTION TWO: What brings you the greatest satisfaction professionally and personally?
Personally, being a mother and wife is what gives me the greatest satisfaction in life. As I watch Annabelle grow, develop and blossom my heart bursts with love and pride. I also love and cherish my relationship with Marcus, my husband of fourteen years (woohoo!) It’s important that we stay strong and close as we are the foundation of our family. Professionally, growth of any kind is what I want – whether that is in my business or my TV career or as an author. I like to challenge myself, push my boundaries and see what happens. And when it comes together there’s no greater feeling. Also, when I get personal responses from people telling me how much the ‘Super Green Smoothie’ lifestyle has changed their life, it really puts a smile on my face. Ever since Maha and I launched our 30 day SGS challenge, we have been inundated with comments, emails and Instagram messages from people raving about their weight loss, how their energy has increased or their digestion has improved. It really makes us so happy that everyone is experiencing the same benefits we did!
QUESTION THREE: Tell us about your lifestyle blog and who the ‘Swiish woman’ is:
SWIISH.com is a lifestyle and fashion blog that I started with my sister Maha a few years ago and that has now grown into an online store as well! On the blog, we share the latest tips, trends across fashion, beauty, health, fitness and home. Essentially, the SWIISH woman is any woman who wants to and enjoys living a fabulous life and wants it (or most of it) at an affordable price. SWIISH is now also has online store as well with a monthly edit of fashion, homewares and ‘Super Green Smoothie’ products
QUESTION FOUR: What was the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?
This is my all time favourite quote from Harrison Ford “I realized early on that success was tied to not giving up. Most people in this business gave up and went on to other things. If you simply didn’t give up, you would outlast the people who came on the bus with you.” My sister Maha gave me this exact advice when I was trying to switch from finance to TV, but her analogy was standing in a line in a nightclub… so yes, a little different to Harrison’s but the message was the same! Persist. Stay on the course. Don’t give up. Others will, you DO NOT!
QUESTION FIVE: Learning that you had stage three breast cancer, the day before giving birth to your beautiful daughter Annabelle Grace, is incomprehensible for most people. How did you juggle your way through such devastating news and cope with a newborn baby at the same time?
It was probably the worst timing possible. I was shocked and I was devastated but most of all I was scared for my baby. I had to go into hospital the very next day to give birth to Annabelle, so that I could start intense chemo – the strongest kind – a week later. I cried so much. I was overcome with grief and really struggled to accept it. Not only did I have to get my head around the fact that I had cancer at the age of 37, but that it meant I didn’t get any of the motherhood experiences I had longed for with my new baby. There were so many days where I felt like I didn’t have the strength, mentally, physically or emotionally to keep fighting. But every time I looked at my new baby, I knew that I had to. I accepted that this was now my life, I found that inner strength and the fighter that was within and I just kept on going, refusing to do anything but to give it all I had. I feel very blessed to live to tell the tale
QUESTION SIX: What is the best thing about motherhood?
The overwhelming love that you feel. As I often say to Annabelle, “I don’t think I could love you any more, even if tried”. It’s somewhat off the charts!
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS: I just asked Marcus, he said vivacious, resilient, loving. (Aww!! That’s why I love him)
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST INDULGENCE? Expensive handbags. They are few and far between, but they are worth it
